The best projector for films is not necessarily the one with the biggest advertised numbers. The experience depends mainly on native resolution, your room, projection distance, sound and ease of use.
Prioritise native resolution
Native resolution is the number of pixels actually displayed. HD can be a budget-friendly introduction to projection. Native Full HD provides more detailed images and sharper subtitles, especially at larger sizes.
Streaming and apps
Check app availability for the chosen model. Netflix, Prime Video and Disney+ require separate subscriptions, and availability can change depending on the system, region and service provider. A compatible HDMI streaming player offers a simple alternative when an app is not available directly.
Sound and connections
A built-in speaker is often sufficient for occasional viewing. For more immersive sound, check for an audio output or Bluetooth. An HDMI input also makes it easier to connect a console, computer or external player.
Our advice
Start by considering your room, projection distance and expectations. For regular viewing, native Full HD, autofocus and suitable connections can make the experience more convenient.
Compare models without mixing up the numbers
Do not compare an ANSI brightness figure with a “lumens” figure that does not state its measurement method. Brightness figures in the range are supplier claims, not independent measurements made by MOODPROJECT. Two projectors advertised at 900 ANSI cannot therefore be compared on that number alone.
Prepare Netflix, Prime Video or Disney+ before viewing
- Check that the app is available and review the service requirements for your projector's system.
- Sign in with your own subscription and play a video to check it works.
- If using an HDMI player, check its power supply and compatibility throughout the video connection.
- Do not assume phone screen mirroring guarantees playback: service protections can restrict some content.
A simple way to adjust the picture
First position the lens squarely towards a flat surface. Adjust image size by moving the projector, then focus it. Use geometry correction only as much as needed. Finish with a dark scene, a bright scene and subtitles. This reveals poor alignment more effectively than a single demonstration image.
