A bedroom projector should be easy to install, unobtrusive and suited to the available distance. Before choosing, measure the distance between the lens and the wall, then check the image sizes specified by the manufacturer.
The most important criteria
- Native resolution: HD can suit occasional use; Full HD provides more detail for films, series and subtitles.
- Focus: autofocus makes moving the projector easier, while manual focus can be sufficient for a fixed setup.
- Image correction: useful when the projector cannot face the wall squarely.
- Noise and sound: in a small room, a quiet fan and a built-in speaker help make viewing comfortable.
- Connectivity: check Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and an HDMI input for an external player or console.
How much brightness does a bedroom need?
A projector performs best in a dark room or with blackout curtains. Advertised brightness cannot always overcome direct daylight. In a bedroom, controlling ambient light matters more than an isolated brightness claim.
What to remember
Start with the projection distance, native resolution and ease of adjustment. Use a light-coloured surface, reduce ambient light and check which apps are actually available. Streaming subscriptions are separate.
A five-minute check before ordering
- Measure the width of the projection area and the distance from the lens to that area. This is different from the distance between the bed and the wall.
- Find an accessible socket and a stable, rigid surface. Keep cables out of walkways and leave air vents uncovered.
- Check the light at your usual viewing time. Blackout curtains can improve contrast without changing the projector.
- List your source: built-in app, computer, console or HDMI player. Check compatibility with the chosen model.
- Compare native resolution, focus adjustment and projector dimensions before looking at the price or maximum advertised image size.
Reading subtitles in a small room
Start with a moderate image size. Increase it gradually, then watch a scene with text near the corners. If characters become difficult to read, reduce the image size and check alignment again. Autofocus cannot replace proper positioning in front of the wall.
